a fat cat is NOT a healthy cat........ I like to thank Catsmom21 for her time and educated advise........
I believe not allowing them to get fat is most important. But all too many people free-feed their cats fattening carb laden kibble. The cat nibbles all day and all night and before a few years pass the cat is a blimp. Then it gets sick.... anyone who thinks obesity is healthy or even OK is dead wrong.
Catsmom21 is very knowledgeable. I always read her posts.
I worked thru diabetes with my cat, who was then about 10. Got rid of the kibble and put him on low-carb, gluten-free flavors of Fancy Feast. With portion control, he lost a lot of weight, and is now completely in remission. The diet was stressful, since he bugged me for food constantly, but I persevered, and he's quite healthy.
