We just picked up a foster cat…3 year old, altered male, who was formerly adopted from our rescue. This is our first foster, although we’ve had many cats over the years.
We have him in a bedroom, with food and his toys and litter box, and he has spent all day under the bed. I know he needs time to acclimate, but any pointers you have are appreciated.
I feel he was well taken care of, not neglected.
Give him time. Sit quietly in there, ignoring him unless he wants attention. That gets him use to you on his terms. Try placing the food so he has to come out from under the bed. Make sure his water is on the other side of the room from his food. Cats are super picky. Unlike dogs, they don’t like their food and water near each other. Good luck.
Cooper just came in and jumped in my lap for some petting. When he and his companion came here as kittens one of the first things I taught them was where they could sit on the computer desk and that the keys were off limits. It seemed to take forever.
Emma likes to sit as close as she can and then, ever so slowly, extend a paw so that it gets closer and closer to the keyboard. She's like a rascally teen. "Well, yeah. I'm touching it but I'm not doing any harm. See?" Always testing.
We get chastised by the scientific minds for anthropomorphizing our cats but they are so human sometimes.

Today, we coaxed him out with a toy and DH was able to hold him for a minute. Baby steps. We also replaced the clay litter with the pretty litter he came with.
The only thing she will eat is tilapia and shrimp I think she's playing me Nonetheless she has eaten her lunch, stalked me and played with her stuffed mouse. Now she's napping on a white fuzzy blanket on the sofa
Climbing over me to fantasize about the wild rabbits out on the lawn. Some days I half expect him to run headfirst into the window and bonk his head.
