Four.

My bro's girlfriend had a flower shop. A neighborhood boy knew of a stray that had two tiny kittens, not even weaned, and then he saw that the mother had been hit by a car. Girlfriend took them into her shop and bottlefed them...one turned out to be blind from birth, optic nerve issue, the other has six toes on both front paws. Then she found another litter of strays, part Maine coon, found homes for them but kept one in her shop with the other two. Then her shop went under. She couldn't take them home and needed a temporary home for them...my landlord was a vet so I figured it would be OK if they stayed with me. That was five years ago. Brother's girlfriend has had serious health problems and can't get on her feet and get her own place, and well, they are my cats now. The year after I took them in, my daughter was begging for a dog, and I kept saying no, and then she found a teensy little kitten in the hayloft of the barn where she took riding lessons...it was part of the barn colony, but the rest of the litter had left and the mother had left it up there. She called me from the barn, put this yowling mouth next to the phone and promised that if she could keep the kitten she'd stop begging for a dog, and I said "deal". That kitten was the skinniest, most pathetic thing you ever saw. Now he weighs about 15 pounds. Still yowls, making almost human sounds.

Daughter's off to college, and now it's just me and the four furballs. Right now there's a wicked storm outside--high winds, drenching rains, the house is shaking, but everybody's curled up and sleeping except me!

Well the amount remains to be seen...........
You see, as usual we head to South Carolina for winters. We became parents of feral cats by pure accident. As a "Momma" cat showed up from the farm one year.
We have fixed her and her litter.......only to not catch her in time and she had two more.
So, in two weeks when we return. We will look out for who arrives. In the meantime the Pet Nanny has come each week, and our daughter trudged up the mountain with food pulled in a basket.
They have been fed with two weekly feeders and then some........
Last year all were there except our beloved favorite "buddy." He was just a scrawny black cat.
But, he was the one who would get brave and befriend our dog, befriend us........and look for us through the window. He would rub along the sides of the poodle like he was his favorite friend in the World.
The first time Buddy came into our home he just ran in a circle and headed out....fast as he could.
Hubby tried to pick him up and he just climbed up him with his nails! The next week buddy came in slowly and ate from our dogs bowl. By the third week.......he came and slept at our feet for a bit. He jumped into the recliner with hubby...and up on the couch by me. As he streached out on the floor I knew we were leaving the very next day...south.
I was sad for Buddy, who was becoming a house cat now.....a friendly cat.
I knew he would miss us terriably.
On our return home his little sister was there, the playful one. She would hide behind a door and play with your fingers........as long as you were on the other side. Momma was there......Big Guy, the brother............A strange stiped cat was even coming to the door. A dog came by, and a deer ran off. Dear Buddy, who most likely went looking for us.......never returned.
I hope he found a good home on his own for he was a gentle, perfect, feral cat.......no more.
Hearing all your wonderful pet stories was so interesting. I don't think I have ever been so impressed with such charming stories.
I wanted you to know about our Buddy.......
Due to a child with Asthma in the family I can't really have a house cat.......Your stories made me miss the times in my childhood when I had some wonderful cats at home.
I wish them all a wonderful and long, long, life. I hope that wherever Buddy is, he has a long one too. The scrawny little back cat, with a heart of gold.

I have a 15 year old beagle and a 5 year old beagle, both females. The 15 year old is the furry alpha. Even the younger cats know that.

Then there is Furball, who I found four years ago when she was four weeks old and had been put in the garage and forgotten by my landlord. They dissapeared for a week and didn't even ask about her for another week but seemed relieved she was still breathing. But by then I knew she was mine. My fifteen year old and her are great buds. And she plays with Pammy, my five year old too.

Then there are the new additions. I didn't intend to have so many cats but couldn't let them sit soaked in the rain when Mom brought them up for me to protect them.

My two boys are Scampy, who is clearly got a heavy dose of Maine Coon. He adores me. He and Furball seem to have a lot of chases and tussles, but they also seem to enjoy it. She's fixed and a small all black cat and he's going to be a lot bigger so its good they make friends now.

Scampy likes to greet you with incessent talking and if you get close enough with do a love nip on the nose to make sure you know he is there. He holds onto your hand with his front paws. He loves laps. Wonderful little boy.

Then there is Patches, who is a mostly white short haired cat with big black patches. He is a love bug. He would rather sit on your lap and be petted than challenge his brother. He has a beautiful face and yellow/green eyes. He purrs when he comes near.

And my girls. Squeeky is marked mostly like Patches and even more a lovebug than he is. Poor girl is in heat and due to me being sick the last four/five months fixing didn't yet happen. She and her sisters are kept from the boys just incase.

Trouble is named that since she loves to play and will decide its time to shower love on her when it strikes her. She's rather shy sometimes. She was improving before the big female male split. She starts chases then retires and has a bell toy that is HERS.

Little One is going to be a clone of Furball when grown. Same black fur, same small size, eyes starting to develope the green color she has. She is very affectionate. Except where Furball was traumatized by children in her first four weeks and doesn't like to be held or picked up, Little one loves cuddles. Little one seems to know she looks so much like her since she has always gone out out of her way to try to get Furball's attention. Even hisses don't deter her. Hoping time and spaying will help.

And Baby... poor girl. She was the last kitten I recovered. She was alone with mom for a week and is scared of so much. She was and will be improving again once the family is reunited, but will always be the one that hides. Like Furball. She's very pretty, white and grey/tabby patches. I wish someone who could give her lots of time and atteniton would give her a home, for it would help, but there are so many cats around here finding homes isn't likely.

And Mom. She is and isn't my cat. She and Furball don't get along. The playful fighting between Scampy and Furball is very different from Mom's zeroing in on her. But she invited herself inside when the kittens were safe and has shown no desire to go, and loves to let me cuddle. She enjoyed bringing me mouses this spring, and she even killed them first. Furball decided to catch them too, but would offer them and let them go and they'd run away. Somehow since a home isn't likely she will stay. She and two other kitties were dumped here last spring, and one is a big, well fed male who still comes for petting and the other one, a beautiful sweet girl, was hit by a car.

My place isn't large and they are probably too many animals, but well... after the time and effort to raise them into beautiful kitties wouldn't let some unknown take them.
