So if you take a selfie with, IE a storefront or a clock behind you, are the letters and the time oriented correctly(in the photo itself, not the preview where you compose your shot)?
Yes or no question here, essays not necessary.
Yes, on my iPhone XR.
iPhones definitely do it the "proper way" so what's the comment about Apple and Samsung?
Then I speak for the majority of 'smart' phone users, whose selfies remain uncorrected(backwards).
Is it really a majority? I didn't set my iPhone to do it either way. It just works that way. Where did you get the idea the other way is the majority way?

My wife's and my phones take selfies correctly. All of our friends' come out sdrawkcab !
I understand why it looks backwards in the view screen - kind of like a mirror - but shouldn't it automatically correct in the taken photo itself?
BTW all our devices do flip the taken selfies, so we can read all signs in them. Guess we are just the few, and the lucky!
And Apple and Samsung have no explanation.
The mirrored option is normally a setting for many phones. I believe most phones do flip it by default (albeit that is also a setting that can be reversed). Because most people see themselves via the mirror, some prefer to preserve that "look" when taking selfies. Of course, this will "mirror" any writings, etc.
Your friends with the phones doing this need to buy a phone made from the current decade and they'd not have problems. I don't know where you got your stats about only 10% doing it right as all phones I've used in the past 5 years or more do it "right".

Uhh, their iPhones, Galaxies, and HTCs are all newer than mine. I have iPhone 4 and 5s, and my selfies always come out correct. As does my wife's 8s.
And if it's not such a big deal, then why are shirts coming out with backwards lettering - so it appears correct in selfies?...
