Lovely beach? Maybe better then the NE ones (never been there), but otherwise the sand and water have been brown and brown both times I have been there--not exactly picturesque (Went to IOP & Folly first time, IOP and Sullivans second time). Does it change to non-murky or something at different times of year? (Personally a big fan of Destin's beach for lower 48...)

Being from the NE, the murkiness of the water seems to be a thing for NY through SC from what I've experienced.. The beach areas are WAY CLEANER and WAY BETTER KEPT than any of the public NY beaches that I've been to (Jones, Robert Moses, Gilgo, Cedar, etc)... I personally haven't seen the "blue/clear water" until I got to FLA.

It's the currents. The currents mix up the sand. It doesn't mean dirtier just sandier. You're still swimming in millions of oyster sperm no matter which beach. :-)

any input on the things I look to escape from living in New England;
-pot holes, any bad roadways in general?
-bugs: stink bugs and moths are just revolting, but I also hope there's no creepy crawlers that are prominenet and worse than the ones in CT.
-jobs: most promenent blue and white collar carrers, and average salaries?
-mean income vs cost of living?

There are still pot holes here but not as bad as New England.
Plenty of bugs here..Palmettos, spiders, and the worst of all..the biting gnats.
Your salary down here will be substantially less down here, but cost of living is less here.
Income vs cost of living.. better down here..taxes are much lower, housing is much less.

I think you'll find things better down here overall except for the bugs. That will be the case with any warm climate.

It's a cool city, but nothing is without troubles.
Number 1 problem is it is behind the times, too many people fight development here.
Number 2 is the gnats, they are terrible in nice weather.

All the good things were said above, but here is no better than other southeastern coastal cities I've been to.
