The South Carolina Department of Education just released the average "ACT" test scores for 2010. The average "composite" score for the state was 19.7. The national average was 21.0

Four Charleston County High Schools exceeded the National average.

Academic Magnet High School - 27.4

Charleston County School of the Arts - 22.6

James Island Charter High School - 20.2

Wando High School - 22.1 (281 students took the test)

Dorchester 2

Fort Dorchester High School - 20.8 (179 students took the test)

Summerville High School - 20.9 (230 students took the test)

Berkeley County

Berkeley High School - 19.1

Goose Creek High School - 18.9

Hanahan High School - 20.6

You cannot count magnet schools as typical public schools.

What % of students from the other schools are represented by the number of students who took the ACT?

That's critical, also.

Okay, I checked out enrollments, and as is their MO, this is just more propaganda from SC's bottom-of-the-barrel public ed system.

You need at least 45% of students from a given HS taking the test for it to be valid, legit:

For Summerville (enrollment, 3500) less than 10% took it; Wando has 2,744 kids and 281 took the ACT, so maybe 11% (rounded off) at best.

Anyway, bogus to the max, as kids here say.

FYI, in states with real educational systems over 50% take the ACT.

Minnesota was #1 followed by Iowa.

Wisconsin was 3rd, 69% of students statewide took the ACT up here.

Minnesota still has best ACT scores in nation; Wisconsin tied for third - TwinCities.com

"Once again, Minnesota is No. 1 in ACT scores among states where a majority of high school graduates take the test. For the sixth straight year, Minnesota came out on top in 2010 among states where more than half of grads took the college-readiness exam."

I went to HS in NJ and we didn't take the ACT, that was for west coast schools way back when.....

I doubt if 50 students took it there....

We took the SAT in Charleston back in the never-never.

But then- as today I suspect- only the kids selected by teachers could take them.

27 states have 50% or > of their students take it, Tom. I do not know about NJ.

Well if anything the results are a little sad because typically only the brighter or more motivated kids will take the ACT since it is not the measuring stick in this part of the country (as OTC pointed out.)

On the other hand- those scores might be lower than than they could be if more kids chose to take it. I assume top flight kids who aren't applying to schools outside the region would see no need to take the ACT. I took it when I was in high school only becuase I was in a talent identification program that used ACT as one of its criteria. And I think I was an 8th/9th grader so I could have well brought down the average. Sadly I score right above the state averae SAT in the 7th grade (not a good sign.)

The quote I found was: "Wisconsin had 47,755 of its 2010 graduates take the ACT at some time during their high school career. They represent 69 percent of the state's most recent graduating class."
Notice the words "graduating class", not total student body. That also means that they took the test some time in the last four years, not this year. Are you comparing Granny Smith to Gala, or did you throw an orange into the mix? I'd like to know what percentage of SENIORS took the test this year in Wisconsin vs. what percentage of SENIORS took the test this year in Mount Pleasant (or whatever city you choose to compare.)

So, in your stats regarding Wando, were those 2744 that you are quoting all seniors?
If I were to assume that you are in fact including the entire student body, and further assume that seniors make up roughly a quarter of the total school population that means 686 seniors total, with 281 taking the test. In my math that equals roughly 40%, not 11%. Still not 69%, but why fudge the figures to make it all look so alarming? Even your 69% comes into question when you have no way of knowing how many of those students actually took the test during the last testing year.

Anyone can take the ACT or SAT there is no teacher selection of students who take these tests, as Geechie tried to imply....
