We're a coastie family moving to summerville in 2 months. Our kids are 6 & 4. We have dogs as well, minature dachshunds & golden retrievers. A couple of questions.. were a very outdoors family.. Where are good parks to go to? Scenery places to walk the dogs and take the kids to play? Do we need to worry about alligators near lakes? We're moving from VA and previously lived in MD. Any info would be great! We have no one around there so im trying to figure things out before we move so it'll be an easier transition on the kiddos.
Thanks!
wannamaker! I also go to azalea, just went on a small today at that park off of 61 and Bacon's bridge road.
But trust me you will like Wannamaker, probably one of the best parks I have gone too, paved and unpaved trails in the woods, playgrounds, dogpark, water park. There are some gators in the lakes, but its not really easy to get to the water's edge.
There are many more even if you want to drive farther away. There even is downtown at battery park, also John's Island and Mt. pleasent have parks similar to Wannamaker. The one on john's island has a dog park with a beach into a lake(no gators) if you want to take the Golden's swimming.
Here is my wiener dog at Azalea https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/534316_3428836034907_1090505907_3420794_1309377299 _n.jpg (broken link)
You may want to consider purchasing a Charleston County Park pass. It allows you unlimited entry to the parks without an additional fee. Having one has made me do more exploring than I might ordinarily do.
Like Mustang said, Wannamaker is a great park to take both the kids and dogs to...James Island County Park is another on with a dog park. As Lisa said, a park pass is the way to go if you want to visit the various county parks often. Charleston County has one of the best park systems that I have seen with something to do for all.
We also do the State Park pass each year...again for a little of nothing you can get into all of the State Parks with the pass. We have taken our kids and dogs to Charlestowne Landing and Poinsett State Park (a short drive away). Many, many other parks we have gone too without the dogs that we all love.
Yes, you should always beware of alligators around any body of water. I see gators at the retention ponds in the subdivisions all the time, so they are also at the parks. Besides the gators, you have to watch for the snakes and do not forget the bug spray!!
I'll echo the Charleston County Parks pass, especially with your kids' ages. Wannamaker is a blast and if you want to mix it up, you drive out to James Island County Park or use it to hit the beach at IOP.
Also, we use the Sawmill Branch Canal Trail for walking and biking. It's totally peaceful back there.
Many neighborhoods have pools and swim teams that compete with other subdivisions. We are very proud of our local parks- Saul Alexander park, Gahagan park, Azalea park , Huger park, Wassamasaw park- all free. Otheres have mentioned the fee parks. It is important to get in the right neighborhood to match your lifestyle.

There is a new dog park in the Summerville area called Skye Dog park. If you google it, you can read some of the articles. It has lots of different doggie areas plus televisions, an arcade, a snack bar (even with adult beverages), and more.
Enjoy your move. You will have lots of places to take the kids and the 4-legged kids!
