Gilligan's is not a chain it is a local restaurant that has four or five stores, not a national franchise...

That's right it isn't a 'national' chain -- it's a 'local' chain

No one said it was a national franchise. I said it was a chain, and by that I mean that the food should be comparable between all their stores.

Gilligan's has seven stores ranging from the greater Charleston area down to Beaufort and over to Lexington.

I still do not concider them a 'chain' restaurant, chain implies franchise, you can't buy a Gilligan's franchise and put it up some where....

Just because they have seven restaraunts around the area does not make them a chain just successful...

Chain does not automatically mean franchise. They have a chain of restaurants.

By Tom's definition, Starbucks is not a chain either (hint: it owns all its stores).

Starbucks is all over the Nation and World for that mater, Gilligan's has 7 stores within 2 hours of each other, not even close in comparison. That is why I called them a Successful Local restaurant that has multiple stores....

But since you brought up Starbucks they are very large international store: from their website

1.Does Starbucks franchise? Starbucks does not franchise operations and has no plans to franchise in the foreseeable future. However our Seattle’s Best Coffee brand does offer franchise opportunities to qualified and select applicants, using a predefined set of criteria and focusing on multi-unit franchisees with a proven track record of success. For more information, visit seattlesbestfranchise.com
So in a way they do franchise, just under a different name....
