Where within the city limits can you live safely less than three miles from from the following and pay no more than $612 rent for two people (Is a gay couple with a small dog allowed to live in a studio or one-bedroom apartment in Charleston, as they are in New York and Washington?): downtown Charleston, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, a good everyday grocery store, Target and Walmart. If this impossible we'd be crazy to leave what we've got. Plus our dog has a dog door, his own three-level kennel with a run, and a big backyard to play in.

No Targets or Walmarts withing three miles of Downtown that I know of and I don't think you will find any rent in a desirable area of Downtown for $612 or <...

I think you may have hit it here.

Maybe someone has ideas for you, but I can't think of a spot.

Well, there is the Seargent Jasper, a dog of a building but nice area and great views. They usually run rent deals.

Whole Foods and Trader Joes require a quick trip to Mt. P, we are not big city enough yet to have multiple WFs
and TJs. Would not surprise me if we did get a second TJs in West Ashley around Bees Ferry a few yrs down the road
that area is booming.

Did you actually think there would be an issue in Charleston with two gay men living together?

I remember a sweet grad student from Ohio moving into the apartment next to mine and confiding that all her friends and family had tried to talk her out of going to school at USC because of the racial violence and Klan marching in the streets. She was actually scared about venturing into the city. The FUD was just befuddling.

You pay to live here that's for sure. I came from Greenville (I notice you are in Columbia) and rent is probably in the same range for both towns. I used to pay $550/month for a nice 1BR, and now I pay over $900 for an even smaller 1BR. And this is 20-25 minutes outside of Charleston in West Ashley. I could have gone a cheaper route and lived in North Charleston or Summerville, but I wanted to be closer to downtown.

Wow. We can leave our living room and be taking our seats for the Columbia City Ballet downtown in 12 minutes literally. In the opposite direction we can be at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's (opens Friday) in seven minutes literally. Kroger is four minutes away literally. The interstates are equally accessible for trips in all directions. Actually Target and Walmart are further out than three miles, but I think we're good. Thanks for the input, everyone.

I would be floored if there was an issue.

Is it even possible to turn down two, gay men? That seems like a lawsuit to me...

I'm a landlord and I know you can't discriminate based on a person's looks, lifestyle, etc., but I do know I can turn away people without telling them a reason why I wouldn't rent to them. Maybe that's what you are getting at? But just FYI...I'd rather rent to a gay couple then a straight couple anyday
