Now that we sold our house, we will be headed that way in the beginning of August. We want to rent before we buy. We are not too picky on the rental as long as it's clean and in a safe area. We'd rather not be in an extended stay or apartment due to the fact that we have dogs. Might have to do it for the 1st week. Schools are not of importance. I hesitate to say this but my husband is still in the process of securing work. I work from home. Our budget is hopefully under $800. Areas we are focusing on are Summerville, Goose Creek, N. Charleston, and West Ashley. Any suggestions?
Most places offer it but your going to pay 75 to 100 dollars more a month than someone on a 6 or 12 month lease. I was paying $700 for a 1br in Hanahan month to month.
We rented a condo with a 6-month lease when we moved here about 2-1/2 years ago. (Back then, it was $850 for a 2-bedroom...not sure what it would be now.) We specifically wanted to rent in a condo complex because we thought it would be quieter and better than an apartment complex (owners occupying the units rather than tenants). Boy, were we wrong. In the complex we were in, most of the condos were not owner-occupied, so they had tenants. We couldn't wait to get out. If you rent a condo, ask what percentage of the units are owner-occupied. We didn't do that, and we wish we had.
One thing I forgot to mention in my post above... At the end of the 6-month lease, they offered a month-to-month which was about $100 more/month added to the rent.
Check with some of the apartments around, they may charge you alot more for a Month2Month but if that is what you really want than it would be worth it to you.
My husband stayed in the Wescott Plantation apartments on a month by month lease. It is more expensive to do the monthly or 3 month leases but there is definitely options out there.
beckycat,
There is no reason why you can't rent a house for a year.
A year would give you some time to think about if you even want to stay
in that area or not.
You never know, you could end up in another area of SC, life is strange.
Contact a realtor in one of those areas, like Summerville, lets just say, and
see what they have available for a years lease.
Then, see how things work out.
Play it by ear, so to speak.
Realtors will handle many rental homes, and the fact that you have dogs,
and would prefer a home rather than an apartment, yea, call a realtor.

Eh...depends on what you are able to negotiate.
My lease is around $300 less than comps in my condo neighborhood...and I'm on 3 month terms.
Edit: I will again add that negotiating is likely much easier, and more productive, if you deal with privately owned property. You may not get great results when renting a condo from a complex that has a rental office (units all owned by the corporation).
