I like Sunmerville because I have everything I need, but I'm not too close to the booming Charleston Metro, but I'm close enough where I can enjoy it on a daily basis.
Yes Summerville's traffic is absurd on Main Street, Berlin G Meyers is getting worse and it's gonna be even worse once new shopping complexes get built along it, but it still has a small town charm that k can't get anywhere else.
With Nexton getting built and all the commercial stuff it's gonna bring will make Summerville a hot destination.
Eventually in the not to distant future the whole Metro area will be insanely crowed and everything is gonna blend in even more now than it ever has, so please stay away from my small Summerville please LOL.
I have a feeling that if I lived in Summerville, Charleston adventures would generally be a weekend thing, maybe even if I worked in charleston. Sort of like they are now, except if I actually lived in Summerville it would likely be almost every weekend instead of every other month or two living in Columbia depending on the season. How long does it generally take to get downtown on a Saturday morning around 10-11 am or so from downtown Summerville?

It took me exactly 30 min to get to the Battery on a weekend, but that was from the Azalea strip mall area right next to the interstate.

I live on the side of Summerville that's considered to be out in the middle of nowhere by the OP. If it's after 6PM on the weekday, and almost anytime on the weekends, its an easy 25-30 minute drive to downtown.

I agree if you drive 85mph. Google map The Ponds YMCA 101 Pottery Circle
Summerville, SC 29483 to Downtown Charleston Aquarium. 45 minutes without traffic.
I never knew there was a "hype" with Summerville. I just thought it was a great town (city) to live/work/play/learn, while enjoying Charleston area amenities without paying Charleston prices.
Summerville may not be for everybody, but neither is downtown, or Mount Pleasant, or North Charleston, or West Ashley, or the islands. That's the beauty of the metro, there is so much variety here.
You have plenty of metros were its really the same thing across the board, but with Charleston you have a lot to choose from.
Some people want to have walkability and don't mind paying $1 million for it or living in a house from 1785. Some people want actual space and a yard and prefer to drive around, with a new home from 2012. It's just preference. But each city around town has it's pros and cons.
And people complain that it takes 30 minutes to get to downtown, but it can still take 15 minutes to get from one end of downtown to the other. You're not missing much.
