Mount Pleasant is generally considered better because of test scores. Summerville ranks higher than Mt. Pleasant in those same tests, or at least has in the past. However, judging from recent SAT test results, Mount Pleasant has more of its students actually taking the exam and earning decent marks.
I feel that a parent should put more emphasis on the performance of the school that their child attends or will attend, rather than putting too much emphasis on the overall County test scores. As has been pointed out in this forum, there are many excellent schools in both Charleston County and Dorchester. Summerville HS and Wando HS are two examples. The achievements of both schools can be seen by the following test scores and "School Report Cards"
Summerville High School
2007 School Report Card – “Good”
2008 SAT ave. 1475 (49% took)
2007 SAT ave. 1502
2008 ACT ave. 21.4
2007 ACT ave. 21.5
2007 AP scores 131 students took, 50% scored between 3-5
Wando High School
2007 School Report Card – “ Excellent”
2008 SAT ave. 1569(80% took)
2007 SAT ave. 1537
2008 ACT ave. 22.4
2007 ACT ave. 21.7
2007 AP scores 249 students took, 91% scored between 3-5
As a parent I choose Mount Pleasant. I have currently have two children in school ages 11 and 16.
