Dorm mates say 21-year-old freshman expected to recover

A College of Charleston student was shot late Monday on St. Philip Street after he told a robber that he didn't have any money, authorities said.
Peter Vagnoni, 21, was taken to Medical University Hospital in serious condition, Charleston County Emergency Medical Services said. The hospital would not provide an update of his condition Tuesday, but his dormitory mates said his parents had arrived in town and that they understood he would recover.
Vagnoni, a freshman at the college, and a friend were on St. Philip Street near Spring Street just before midnight when a man approached them with a handgun and asked for money, a police report states. It stated that when Vagnoni told the man he didn't have any money, the man shot him in the stomach.
Police arrived and found Vagnoni lying on the sidewalk, alert and conscious, the report said. He described his assailant as black, in his early to mid-20s, about 6 feet tall and wearing a white T-shirt and another white T-shirt wrapped on his head, police said.
The suspect was not able to take anything before he ran away toward Bogard Street.
Another College of Charleston student was kidnapped and robbed on April 21 a few blocks away at the Meeting Street Piggly Wiggly.
A man kidnapped William Porter, 19, about 10:30 a.m. in the grocery store parking lot and forced him at gunpoint to drive to an empty parking lot in North Charleston. After a tense 15 minutes of confusion and rage, the robber got out with Porter's cell phone and $50.
Abraham Isaac Varns, 27, of North Charleston is charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a gun in the commission of a violent crime. He remained at the Charleston County Detention Center on Tuesday night. His total bond is $95,000.
