Yet another New Yorker (by way of Virginia) considering a move to Charleston due to a job offer! I have been there before but pretty much stayed in the historic downtown area (which I loved). Also, my family lives in SC so that is a positive incentive for the move. Here are some questions I'm facing:
*Can I find a small apartment in/near downtown Charleston for under $800? (I want to avoid those large apt complexes that seem to be in the surrounding area. Would prefer a mom & pop rental such as a converted hosue.)
*If not downtown, what neighborhoods are good? This may sound weird coming from a New Yorker, but I am very concerned about the Charleston crime rate. Also, I will have to drive downtown for work every day (Percy St) so the shorter the commute, the better.
*Once you get out of downtown, is the area just suburbs?
*If anyone is currently renting in the Chas area, I'm wondering what the average cost of utilities is--gas/elec, water, sewage, etc.
Any advice is welcome and appreciated! Like I said, I fell in love with Charleston when I visited, but I was really only in the touristy areas. What's the "real" Charleston like?
