We have family on DI - but it's pretty $$$ there. What are some nice places to live within a few miles of DI?

Depends on your price range, but Nelliefield Plantation and The Peninsula would both work. They're off Clement's Ferry Rd., before you get to Hwy 41. That puts you under 10 minutes to Daniel Island proper. Single Family homes and townhomes in the $175k-300k range. Then St. Thomas Point and Centex's new construction at Shellring, which would start in the mid/upper $300's.

If you look across the Wando, Belle Hall Plantation (entrance is at the Waffle House on Long Point Road) is an excellent neighborhood. We have lived there since 1996 and love it. Call me at 843-655-1124 if you would like to talk about it.

Park West, Dunes West and Rivertowne, Planters Pointe are all within 15 minutes to DI. They are in Mount Pleasant.

Also Shell Ring @ St Thomas Point is nice it's a centex community under 500K but I don't currently see anything for sale on MLS. If you have a Realtor ask them to check on X's and W's for you.

Belle Hall may be your best bet. And, for some reason, there
are a lot of short sales in the neighborhood in the 400k+ range.
We live on DI and often go to Long Point Road for dinner -- and
occ. for Harris Teeter.

Shell point is close to a sketchy, known 'drug intersection.' There
was a shooting there recently and it is not policed well because of
different police jurisdictions. Search the the DI newspaper for more
information.

The subdivisions on Clements Ferry are further away from amenities.
But, I can see more amenities built around that area in the next
decade.

All those subdivisions on 41 are more than 15 mins away, even
if you take the back route up 41 (heck, it may take you five
minutes to get of the subdivision). You'd be closer if you looked
at Snee Farms off 17 or subdivisions off the IOP connector.

For reference, it takes me 9-10 mins to get to the 526/17 intersection
from DI (south side). If you expand your range to 25-30 mins, you would
have many more options.

I live in Park West and it take me 25 minutes to get to the airport. If the traffic is light. It might take 25 to get to some points on DI but it is still close. I agree there are some not so nice areas around DI. Clements ferry can be bad with Truck traffic it just depends on time of day.

Long Point subdivisions are probably the best and closest.

You have also got Beresford Creek Landing, Beresford Commons and Beresford Hall. Some may be $$$ but depending on what your looking for you may get good value.

Going the other way, Oak Terrace Preserve, by the redeveloped School Of The Arts may be worth a look.

I checked out the Oak Terrace Preserve and it looked pretty interesting. There were some pockets of sketchiness around it but I'd seriously consider it. Only thing I wished it had was a community pool.

What's the scoop with the School of Arts? It looked pretty sizable. What grades does it include?

Default Oak Terrace Preserve/School of the Arts

The new school for the School of the Arts is partly completed at a cost of upward of $34 million. The school cover Grade 6 to 12 with entry by "Audition Only". The school covers, Vocal, Dance, Drama, Writing and Visual studies. The campass will be shared with Academic Magnet, giving the school award winning Arts and Academic programs.

Both our children attend SAO and are every happy there.

I would expect the old school to be redeveloped, into possibly more housing.

I don't know whether a community pool is an option, possibly not. But ask the question to the builders or Oak Terrace Preserve.

The area has improved over the last 6 years of our kids attending SOA and I would expect with the building of Oak Terrace, for it to continue.

@atlanta hope: Oak Terrace was created with a goal of being a community-focused, sustainable neighborhood and has one several national awards and grants for doing just that. A swimming pool would be a step in the opposite direction, especially when there is a community pool just down the street at the Danny Jones rec center.

@PapaJim: Park Circle is the best place to live in Charleston (and one of the best in the US from a recent Men's Journal article), and is about six miles from Daniel Island. It's significantly closer to all the interesting stuff than Mt Pleasant, has a strong sense of community, and it's near the excellent riverfront park and two community centers. You can get just about anywhere on foot or bike, except the grocery store (though one is in the works already). All the neighborhoods are great; you won't find many brand new homes, cul de sacs or gated entrances. Apart from Oak Terrace and Mixson, most homes (like mine) were built in the 50s. We have active civic clubs in each section (who really wants an HOA?), great block parties and arts events, and you'll easily find a comfortably-sized home in the 100-200 range. I gush a little, but I'd be remiss in letting everyone else send you to Mt Pleasant without mentioning the Circle.
