Hi-
I'm thinking of moving to Union County with my family from Michigan. I like about 1/2 acre, near shopping areas, good school system, low taxes, etc.
I'm retired so job search isn't an issue for me. Any suggestions about best cities or areas to avoid? Thanks!
Personally I think Weddington, Waxhaw, Marvin, and Wesley Chapel are some of the best areas in Union County (and are rather close to Charlotte as well). I'd avoid Monroe and the surrounding areas (Sun Valley, Indian Trail).
I respectfully disagree with thomastt. We live in the Sheridan community in Indian Trail and have all that spicerack is looking for. Lots range from 1/4 to over 1/2 acre, easy access to all kinds of shopping, Weddington school district, and comparatively low taxes. Sheridan is all 4 sided brick homes, has two beautiful nature ponds with walking trails, a planned community pool, and is a growing friendly community. We are retired, like spicerack, and there are several other retired folks here. The prices are excellent right now with several specs homes about to go on the market along with builder Timberstone offering new two story and ranch homes.
I've described Sheridan as being right on the line between country and suburban, depending on whether you turn right or left out of the community. The best of both worlds.
As to your question, spicerack, about being over built -We haven't found that to be the case, yet. Traffic in our immediate area is not bad at all. Independence Ave. is a main route to Charlotte and through Union County, so is a busy road. But not having to commute and finding back roads to everywhere has made it not an issue for us.
To the OP, most of your neighborhood search will be driven by your price range. The good news is that there are tons of great deals in Union County now in neighborhoods with great schools that would meet your description. Stick toward the northern part of Union County near the county line and you should fine a lot that you will probably like.

I would not put Sheridan at the top of my list for a community to move in. That "planned" community pool has been talked about for years and a majority of lots are empty. The starting prices went from "the 360's" when I first moved here, to the "220's" where they are now. Sheridan will not fill up for a long time unless they really cheapen the homes even more (you can't keep the "quality" of home the same if you make extreme price drops like they've done). I feel bad for the people who bought there over the past couple of years because all those empty lots are a major eyesore for anyone who drives by it.
The best places given your criteria will be determined by your price range -- let us know your price point and we can give better suggestions for neighborhoods and areas.
Don’t feel sorry for us, CouponJack. The Sheridan community, just like a lot of communities in Union County hit hard by the economy, is starting to grow again. The neighbors here know each other, watch out for each other and welcome each new neighbor who moves in. I know the names of EVERYONE who lives in my community and at least a little bit about them, and they know me. And we’ve only been here 7 months. How many people who live in a subdivision can say that?
As for the empty lots being an eyesore, those lots are like most of Union County – land growing naturally. Some people like that. But it’s a temporary condition.
Covenants restrict the type of homes that can be built here – 4 sided brick, stone, stucco, cedar shake single family homes; minimum total heated area 2,000 sq. ft. on any lot size for one story dwellings, or depending on lot size a minimum 2,500, 2,700, or 3,000 sq. ft. for two story dwellings; interior ceiling heights minimum 9’ on first floor; minimum two car garages for all, etc.
Of course the prices you mention are base price and you will find base prices are lower in all communities.
Although nothing is ever guaranteed the pool and cabanas are still in the plans. But until then we enjoy walking the nature paths around our ponds, chatting with the neighbors, the ladies of the community meeting for dinner, fishing the ponds, and welcoming new neighbors.
Don’t be sad for us…

I'm the opposite. I live in Indian Trail and LOVE it!
Indian Trail sounds like a good fit based on the limited info in the OP. Great bargains out there.
