This was online this morning, what a shift in the times. THey used to be the hottest game in town. It's kinda sad too.

It is sad.
I remember making middle of night runs to a Krispy Kreme store to catch the sign lit letting you know they are coming out hot and fresh.

I also remember it was such a great tool for fundraisers for schools, and civic groups.

I just read the article,

1) It's a franchise store NOT the corporation.
2) It's out in IL, MO, IN area and they aren't as KK friendly as the south is.
3) And they aren't closing their doors completely, just some of the stores.

S'ville's Krispy Kreme files for Chapter 11 (broken link)

Sweet Traditions blamed a lease dispute and a lack of new products from North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme for its financial problems.

i think KK needs to open more stand alone stores...their donuts are handsdown the best when they are hot...i wont buy one if they just put them in a case at another store...but i will pull over and stop if the Hot Now sign is on.

i think they are using the wrong strategy.

Who would have thunk that there would be way more DD's than KK's in Charlotte?

I, too, remember many late night drives to KK's from my college days. Good times.

Just before they went public my husband and I were saving up a down payment for our first house. I begged him to buy $1,000 of KK IPO stock at $9/share with some of the $$ we had saved up and pull it out when the downpayment was due, but he hesitated, preferring to just keep the $1,000 in the bank towards the downpayment and be confident it wouldn't be "thrown away".

Well, of course right about the time our downpayment was to be plunked down, the KKD stock had already split twice and was valued at $40 per share. Needless to say our downpayment could have been much nicer (about $16,000 more, I think) if he had let me use that $1,000 at $9/share...

I love KKD - always will.

Here's a marketing strategy for them: Make the donuts, sell them. The ones that are leftover will typically harden like a rock within a few days, then sell those to the NHL for hockey pucks.

I'm going to be a millionaire!
