I spotted this thread over on the Raleigh forum and enjoyed the responses. I was thinking we could cover the Piedmont Region of North Carolina in a thread on our forum. What are some fun small towns to explore within a two-hour day trip of Charlotte?

Not a small town, but, really, check out the Schiele Museum in Gastonia. It's affiliated with the Smithsonian. If people go there & see that there's nothing to be afraid of, then it's easier to point out other things to check out in Gastonia.
There's the Boone/Blowing Rock area. I heard the Tweetsie Railroad was opening for the season this weekend. My sister went to Appalachian State University in Boone, and we always teased her she attended UNC-Tweetsie.Tweetsie Railroad
