I spotted this thread over on the Raleigh forum and enjoyed the responses. I was thinking we could cover the Piedmont Region of North Carolina in a thread on our forum. What are some fun small towns to explore within a two-hour day trip of Charlotte?

Great thread idea

Right off the bat, the town that immediately comes to mind is Hendersonville NC

Why don't we start with Belmont. Go to Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. There are shops & restaurants downtown.

I love Hendersonville! Visitors Information Center | Hendersonville | Flat Rock | CVB | Henderson County NC | Western North Carolina

Any time would be a nice time to go there, but apple picking season comes to mind.

I'm usually passing through when I go past Belmont. Maybe I'll have to slow down and stop one of these days:

Thanks for adding the South Carolina links. We are so closed to South Carolina that a day trip across the line is easy.

Not a small town, but, really, check out the Schiele Museum in Gastonia. It's affiliated with the Smithsonian. If people go there & see that there's nothing to be afraid of, then it's easier to point out other things to check out in Gastonia.

There's the Boone/Blowing Rock area. I heard the Tweetsie Railroad was opening for the season this weekend. My sister went to Appalachian State University in Boone, and we always teased her she attended UNC-Tweetsie.Tweetsie Railroad

Oh, and if you enjoy a small mountain town with trains, Dillsboro is another good place to visit.
