I'm building a garage that's 30x24, and so I'm trying to hire someone to do the slab and set it up with bolts to use for my framing. The city said it needs to have 12" footings around the perimeter, and that the framing must start no lower than 6" above the dirt. My land is pretty much level.
To me, a garage slab sounds like a pretty common thing, but I'm having a really hard time getting people to give me quotes, and if they do, it's exorbitantly high.
Does anyone know what a good price would be for something like this?
Concrete is always going up. I don't know how high your quote was, but you'll be needing someone with a small backhoe for the footers, the slab will need forms and finishing, brooming, expansion joints, the whole nine yards. Then you'll need a mason for the block or brick. It's not terribly complicated, but it all adds up quickly.
As far as what it should cost, I wouldn't have any idea. I do know that the required 12" footings on one project turned into almost 4' deep because the dirt was too soft. They may be taking that possibility into consideration in their quotes.
Everything is so expensive these days to build and then the additional property taxes off the inflated value of the structure hurt too. I ended up moving and going with a place that had a nice existing detached.
Owner is an old school concrete guy. No BS, no crazy prices, and most importantly, shows up on time and does a great job. I had a terrible time dealing with concrete guys. Half never showed for estimate, half that did were crazy prices. Others want to schedule it out months in advance (I needed the repairs before we could put our house on the market so waiting months wasn't an option).

One guy said around 3500, a couple others said 5500. They all seemed disorganized and incapable of putting pricing together.

6-10k? I'm sorry but even I know that's not realistic.
I recall a buddy of mine paid 6 I think for a storage build slab out here in Gaston County. Might have been around the same size, maybe a few feet larger. Just make sure it's done right.
I said 6-10 because if your in Charlotte, the quotes are gonna be + + + from all the predators
