A proposed neighborhood shopping center at Rea Road and Tom Short Road in the Marvin and Weddington area of Union County took a step forward on Feb. 8 when the Union County Board of Adjustment approved the developer's Special Use Permit.
Commercial development firm Raley-Miller proposed the retail site for a large wooded parcel that backs up to the Somerset neighborhood and sits across from Hunter Oaks and Marvin Creek. The land is also the site of a previous heated debate with Wal-Mart over a proposed Super Center, although Raley-Miller was not involved in the Wal-Mart project that was ultimately defeated.
The Charlotte-based developer reduced the size of its proposed retail center from 275,000 square feet to 240,000 square feet. Local residents also were pleased at the removal of a proposed cell tower from the project.
The new development is expected to include a Harris Teeter grocery store no larger than 82,500 square feet, up to three restaurants with drive-through lanes, a convenience store and gas station, a car repair business and a bank. Developers also shared plans for traffic and buffer considerations related to the center.
Five access points would allow traffic to enter the complex -- three on Rea Road and two on Tom Short Road. Tintinhull Lane would extend from the Somerset neighborhood to Rea Road. Sidewalks would extend to the Mecklenburg County line and to Creekstone Drive in the Hunter Oaks neighborhood. Hours of delivery would be restricted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for businesses that back up to Somerset residences.
Well this sounds like it could be one of the new super size Harris Teeter stores that are now being developed. A 78,200 sq. foot store just opened near Pinehurst, and apparently another large one is being planned for Fayetteville. The Pinehurst store is reportedly very nice and somewhat similar to Wegman's, according to reports. It seems Kroger may now be backing these larger stores.

After the big Ingles opened in Kings Mountain & Dallas as well as in the mountains, Teeter pulled out of Asheville, Shelby, & Gastonia, saying that they wanted to pull out of rural areas. The reality was that they left a store in Lincolnton until a big Ingles opened there. The reality is that the big Ingles have seating areas where someone can sit & eat or have a cup of coffee. Because of that, they can sell beer on Sundays. They were taking too much business away from the Teeters.
You can't sell beer on Sundays? All of the stores around me do. I thought that was only in SC.
Unincorporated Union County is still dry. They're trying to fix that in the next election, though.
The large format Krogers are "Kroger Marketplace", which are over 100k square feet and compare with Wegman's. The last set of plans for this corner included a Harris Teeter of that size and was probably a prototype for a "Harris Teeter Marketplace".
This is Harris Teeter planning for the future. With the Rea Road Extension starting construction in 2019, traffic in this section should increase. Also, according to this forum, Publix is still playing around with the corner of Providence and New Town Road, although nothing is confirmed yet.

First, Harris Teeter is opening larger stores in North Carolina. I would not be surprised to see larger stores open in other states like South Carolina.
Second, Harris Teeter is adding fuel centers to new and existing stores. I wonder if a convenience store with gas station would be an extension of Harris Teeter.

Kroger Marketplace stores are hypermarkets that compete against Walmart Supercenter and Super Target stores. Wegman's would not be considered a hypermarket.

Any new store Publix is announcing in its Charlotte Division is opening either in 2017 in North Carolina and South Carolina or in 2018 in Virginia. Additional stores in the newest division may be expediting a new distribution center to provide relief to the existing Dacula, Georga, distribution center.
It's like they're doubling down on locations in Charlotte. I now have 4 of them within a 10 minute drive, one is the new style with the gas station and all. I didn't realize they even had enough demand to support all these stores.

FYI, in York county, you can purchase beer in the groceriws on Sundays. Even better, you don't have to wait until noon like Mecklenburg requires.
