I am originally from the NYC metro area, and yes, I did see some movement in terms of neighbors coming and going. But for the most part, newcomers gave a lot of forethought before moving, and they intended to make NY their permanent home.
What I mean to say is that although there was a fresh wind of immigrants coming into NY all of the time, most of them settled down, and had no desire to leave their new home. So in this regard, it didn't "feel" transient.
Charlotte's different in that, while the City attracts talent from all over - and that's good - I do come across a fair amount of "well, we're here for now, but in ten years, we'll probably retire to..."
There is a degree of transiency here that I am not accustomed to. Makes me wonder what motivated people here in the first place, hence the poll .
As for me, the primary reason is that I had gotten tired of the NYC rat race, followed by the cost of living. But my Wife & I liked this area, it's people, and it's customs, so we decided to make CLT our home.
One of the pleasant surprises I have found in this area, are the progressive policies towards the planning and implementation of parks, trails/greenways, protection of our drinking water, and mass transit.
I do hope to see some of the local character remain, as it was Southern hospitality that drew us to the area ...
I hope that HB2 nonsense is dealt with accordingly. Lot of business/money lost because of it, and is going to be an impact on businesses choosing to come here or not. There are a few high rises in the city that were meant to be filled by now, but the bill has scared prospects away.
I came down with my wife who was offered a partnership in the building industry.
We stayed because she has family in the area.
