meet the new club, same as the old club. Not sure why the epicentre continues to have clubs that turn people using poor excuses and then let another group in right behind them.

Well, these 3 Black women made a funk about it and went to social media and the rest is history.

Looks like Kandy Bar lied about needing a membership, then tried to make a membership page on their website AFTER it hit the fan (news). Of course they weren't done. To make matters worse they went on FB and posted a response calling patrons ignorant, erased it and then put up a softer message but it's too late.

This isn't New York City. Stop it.

It's wrong on many levels to deny access to a facility based on race, religion, and culture. Many clubs throughout the US use membership tactics and dress codes to reduce the number of African American guests.

On the other hand, clubs with frequent visits from young African Americans are often shut down due to a fight and/or random shots being fired. This trend tends to occur at African American establishments the most.

So while part of me is angry at Kandy for their racist tactics.....I find myself torn with the reality that our African American demographic accounts for an extremely high portion of our Nation's violent crimes (given the fact that we're only 13% of the US population). Also, most of the clothing items that were (later) banned were popular gang-affiliated attire. Unfortunately, we African Americans dominate the gang culture in this city as well.

And let's face it.....Eventhough most of us (African Americans) know how to act in public, the perception (due to alarming statistics) is a bit skewed against us.

IMO, places like Kandy should be exposed and shut down. They are a throw-back to the Jim Crow era of "keeping the blacks down and out". However, I do believe that places like Kandy are simply responding to those alarming stats about young black night life. Both Kandy and the thug-culture needs to pack up and leave town for good. Problem solved....

3 well dressed Black women... this doesnt have anything to do with thugs, gangs or guns.

lets be honest, the majority of gunfire and gang activity doesnt end up in the Epicentre and they damn sure arent trying to go to an upscale dessert bar.

Sounds to me like you're talking out the side of your neck. There are plenty of African American and other diverse clubs that have been opened for years without incident. Either practice an open door policy or shut down, problem solved....

No question Kandy is a racist establishment. I saw the facebook post and video clip last night. However, the racist bs goes both ways in uptown. Ever heard those black preachers uptown preaching against "the white devil"?

Any way, this beautiful young lady handled this the right way; by exposing Kandy on social media. She's got over 35,000 facebook shares already!!!

I don't normally stick my nose into racial issues, but I do have to point out that I've said on pretty much any visit to the Epicenter that the Kandy Bar seems to be more tailored to White, Hispanic, Asian, essentially anyone who isn't Black, while the club next door (Vault maybe? I forgot) seems to have an almost all Black clientele. If the Kandy Bar was trying to keep Black patrons out they sure didn't do it subtly.
(PS, I don't go to clubs often, but I checked out Vault once out of curiosity, it's certainly not like those clubs on the Plaza, so to suggest the Kandy Bar's decision is based on concerns regarding gang violence, etc is legitimate are just ill conceived.)

What idiots. First of all, Kandy Bar was the name of the bar in Weird Science where Anthony Michael Hall & friend were taken to by Lisa, played by Kelly LeBrock.....and Kandy Bar was a 100% BLACK bar playing blues and soul music. So poor name choice if you didn't want blacks coming.

Second, in this day and age any slight or simple faux pas misunderstanding between a white and a black could immediately result in DEFCON 1 accusations of racism and career ending results for the white. So to actually BE racist is like handing over a winning Powerball ticket. How could they not know to be cautious, defferential and walking on eggshells in that scenario?

Agreed. I saw photo's of the patrons attempting to enter the club, and they are *so far removed* from appearing to have any attachment to criminal behavior.

What happened at Kandy was blatant.

Those preachers aren't barring anyone from entering an establishment or anything like it though; it's nothing but rhetoric. I'm not condoning it, but this really isn't example of things "going both ways."
