My husband and I may be moving to Charlotte, NC this year for his job. We don't have children and we'd be working in uptown Charlotte. Could you recommend some communities south of Charlotte that are in quieter, upscale communities? For reference, we like The Peninsula in Cornelius very much, but the commute, from my understanding would be ridiculous which is why we're looking further south. Budget would be around $800k. We very much like being outdoors hiking, biking, and being on the water. Thank you kindly.

The commute from "south of Charlotte" to Uptown will be just as bad, or worse, than from Cornelius.

The only real option to be on the water south of Charlotte is on Lake Wylie. Here's some websites that might get you started:

My suggestion is to get a realtor, since you have very specific requirements.

I would consider purchasing a shack on the lake to get away to for weekends and purchasing your work week home closer into the city. Working uptown and living on the lake is doable, but the traffic is getting worse, not better, and I'm not sure the commute stress would be worth it.

Totally understand that some people enjoy driving more than others though. Keep us posted with your searches. There are many great family-friendly neighborhoods within 485 that offer a quiet/suburban feel while placing you within 20 minutes of uptown in regular traffic.

If you really love the Peninsula, toll lanes will be finishing up in a couple of years. If you are willing to pay money to shorten your commute in order to live on the lake, you might be able to make the drive within 40 minutes at rush hour with the new toll express lanes (supposed to keep traffic moving at like 40mph + for people paying).

The rates on the toll road will be based on demand. I think estimates are around $3 - $5 each way for a distance like Cornelius to Charlotte. There isn't a cap though, so let's say everybody uses it... they then raise the price to keep traffic moving.

Have you thought about living in Uptown? Then having an apt at the lake?

At Lake Wylie, residents and visitors, kayakers, etc may even enjoy an occasional interaction with a member of the alligatoridae species. Yesterday: www.instagram.com/p/Bft0BQnBUzf/
