Hello everyone. I'm attending UNCC this fall semester and looking for an apartment somewhere close to main campus. I'll be living with my mom so student housing is not an option. Our budget is around $900 (could be stretched to $1000 if necessary but we'd rather not go that far) I've taken a look at the University area, but all of the decent apartment complexes are rather expensive. Can you guy recommend me somewhere with affordable , safe apartments and somewhat close to the campus (around 20 minutes commute by car would be nice )? Is living in downtown Huntersville a good option?
Huntersville will be an arduous commute. I'd recommend just getting an apartment in the University area. That way you also are closer to the campus for when you want to utilize the resources available to students. Check out The Highlands off Mallard Creek Church Rd. They were trending close to $1000/mo when I lived in that area but they might have gone up now.
Lots of apartments off Mallard Creek Church, but if you are looking at 2 bedrooms and 2 baths you will be pressed to find one for under 1100.00 per month. The only place i know they are consistently below 1100 per month is along Old Concord Rd running toward WT Harris Blvd.
For $900-$1000, you will not likely find a two bedroom unit that is safe, convenient, or in good repair, but it's possible. Watch the areas. Some are not very safe. Check Mecklenburg County crime by zip codes that is found somewhere on the net. That will help you with the safety factor.
You might look in the Concord Mills area, Concord off of Highway 29, Out past Harrisburg on Highway 49. That budget is going to be a bit tight for a 2B/2B in a good apartment complex anyway around here though.

A commute from Huntersville is easy. Especially if from Gilead. Not so bad by any means from Sam Furr either.
During rush hour. It takes like. 20-30 minutes to get to UNCC. I just always left an hour early (parking is the problem on campus....)
I’d look into south Charlotte near Woodlawn. Archdale. Light rail will take you right on to campus and no parking hassle (FYI. Sometimes there just isn’t any parking. And that’s the bulk of your commute). Those areas are affordable. Huntersville is expensive

Just to expand on huntersville. It’s such an amazing town, so if the financials work out. Great!
But I485 opened 1 or 2 years ago and so the commute is so great compared to before it was open. It was miserable before that.
Thank everyone for the advice. I decided to settle in Huntersville and finished moving yesterday. The commute is great so far; driving on I-485 is a breeze.
Btw, is the Huntersville DMV super busy like the ones in Charlotte? Now that I need to update my address, I'd would like to get my first REAL ID as well.

No. The DMV is nice, large, modern and fast.
