I'm reading all of the posts about all this crime in Charlotte. We're moving to Union County this summer. What type of crime are you talking about and what can we do to prevent them? I would imagine coming from NY the statistics are the same regarding crime? Or am I mistaken. I'm not sure either way but coming from NY to Charlotte and reading that there's high crime, I'd like to know 1) what type of crime everyone is talking about and 2) what is your suggestion for being more safe?

There have been many threads about this of late. The major crime we are talking about are residential breakins, although home invasions, robberies, assualts, and car jackings are problems too. What we can and are trying to do is vote the right people into office and get the right judges too, the ones with the tough stances on crime. The problem is, I don't think there are tons of criminals roaming the streets of Charlotte, but rather it is the same ones who are released and go back to their life of crime that cause the problem. I can't speak for U. county, only Charlotte. I can say though that since awareness has brought these issues to light, I think a lot of people are observant when they go out and of their neighborhood. I know in my neighborhood they hired off duty police officers as security and that has really helped.

Also, the crime stats that you requested:
NY,NY's violent crime rate (1.23 times national average
Charlotte's violent crime rate (1.8 times national average)

Yikes, so the crime is higher in Charlotte than NY? Interesting! So when you say Charlotte do you mean the city or suburbs?

2 carjackings a day is normal in Charlotte. When there are 5 a day, it makes the news. Pathetic thing is, that 2 carjackings is considered normal and does not make the news.

Crime is pretty sick here actually. People are starting to realize it, and not deny it, as they see it affecting the neighbours, their colleagues, and themselves.

Simply put, here is the scoop. Charlotte has always had a few known pockets of crime and the thugs pretty much stayed in their own hood. However, some particularly brazen, arrogant types have figured out that the burbs are full of good stuff like laptops, xboxes, plasma tvs, etc and so they are kicking in doors in broad daylight and also engaging in home invasions at nite. The police force has been on it and have rounded up quite a few of these psychos. However, we keep seeing guys picked up and released on bail . . . only to offend again . . . or they plead out cases and end up on the streets. . . and back to their criminal activities.
There have been at least four community meetings in the past month - and everyone is taking an active stance w/ personal safety - and neighborhood watches are being formed in areas where none have existed.

So we all just have to set our alarms, know our neighbors, pay attention in our neighborhoods, use good judgment when out and about, etc. We will eventually catch up w/ the miscreants who are ripping us off and scaring us.

Speaking for Union County, most of the crime takes place in Monroe. They have a whole page dedicated for the police blotter on Sunday's....

Well, in addition to anifani821's scoop, don't forget about the armed robberies and murders going on in this city. It isn't all property crime. Also, larceny from a vehicle is a whole different animal than breaking and entering residences.

Yes, larceny from vehicles and vehicle theft are very popular around here. My perspective, those are just things. I'd much rather someone steal my car or something from the car then break into my house. Honestly, I am unaware of the murder rate rising, just armed robberies and property crimes.
