This week Relocate-America named Charlotte Number One in their 2008 Top 100 Places To Live. Reading their article it seems they take nominations from individuals that actually live in their nominated city.

Forbes has a list of America's Most Miserable Cities and ... Charlotte is Number Nine.

This is odd ... Charlotte is considered the best place to live in America by R/A (posted on the MSN home page, same day as Forbes article), and it ranks 9th on their "miserable" scale. I wonder if the reporter even interviewed anyone that lived in Charlotte.
No one draws up a best list unless something is in it for them so it never a real true accurate list. For example if you scour the r. america website you will see that under corporate it states this

Miserable could mean a lot of things...miserable traffic, miserable heat, miserable lack of water, know what I mean?

Yep. Editors have reasons for the articles they choose - and the cities they choose to include in the articles!!!!
Excellent point, Sunny!!!
Carolina Woman - what do you think about Charlotte? I believe it only matters what we Carolinians think about our cities!! Of course, I know economic development often depends on a city having that "bright and shining" reputation . . .but in the end . . . satisfaction can only be measured by talking to people who actually live here . . . (as you so wisely stated).
All "lists" are completely bogus. They're all totally subjective. Best-this, worst-that...says who, and based on what?? Bah!
Maybe we're all miserable because people keep coming here thinking it's some sort of Utopia and then complaining to us about how awful it is that they can't find a job, and the traffic is bad, and that crime is out of control, and it's too humid in the summer and the bugs are enormous and o.m.g. the pollen!!! But...but...it was voted the BEST place to live!!!
Don't get me wrong: I love it here so much I moved here *twice*, but it is NOT for everyone!!!
I guess that means your and my misery scales are pretty low then.
