We are looking at a possible move to North Carolina and are looking into Union County. My wife is an RN and I am a teacher with 2 children ages 12-9. I've seen some schools advertising such as Weddington and Cuthbertson, any thoughts? Also, hospitals in the area or how long of a commute to some? Thanks for your input.

Both of those schools would be excellent to work for and/or attend. Very nice schools and wonderful areas of Union county. Cuthbertson is actually new and yet to open.
Hospitals in the area that would be a relatively easy commute would be in Monroe, Matthews or Pineville. Even downtown (uptown) wouldn't be too horrible from these areas - people make that commute daily. There are also a ton of medical offices in the Ballantyne/ Blakeney area just across the UC border in South Charlotte. Very easy commute as well.
ahhh...kinda. I would say more rural type suburbs. It's much quieter and more peaceful than the city, but still very close to many conveniences. Truth is with recent growth, sometimes it's hard to distinguish where Charlotte ends and UC begins. For instance, Weddington and Cuthbertson are only a 10 minute drive to the Blakeney/ Ballantyne area, which are true suburbs with lots of dining, shopping, enetertainment options.
Lot's of really nice homes in the areas you asked about. Most of the students would be upper-middle to upper class socio-economically.
I would also look into Marvin Ridge Middle and High School....it is also new, June 09 will have its 1st senior graduation, the school is excellent...my son is in the Middle school and well we couldnt be happier, coming from NJ...good luck, we live in Hunter Oaks in Marvin/Waxhaw..My son is 13 and my dd is 9....Kensington elem will feed into Cuthburtson Middle and HS, which would be Waxhaw...Marvin Ridge Cluster for Elem school would be Rea View ( also brand new school) then there is Sandy Ridge which is one of the best in Union for elem, my dd attends kensington but our (home school) is Rea View..any questions pls feel to send me a message...

As long as you don't have to go to uptown Charlotte for your job living in western Union County is nice. The overcrowded roads would be my biggest concern if I were you.
You will not be disappointed with Union County. I would consider it the best of both worlds...easy access to shopping/dining but w/ the beauty of the country! The schools are GREAT...nice people...nice neighborhoods. We do have a new medical Ctr. opening right up on Rt 16 in Waxhaw/Weddington.
We moved here in 2000 from Maryland and just to add a bit of urgency to your step--spent Christmas day in shorts and a tee. : )
My husband, children and I live in Union County and love it. The taxes are lower than neighboring Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) and we are just about 15-20 minutes to Uptown (downtown Charlotte).
The schools in Weddington are great and Cuthbertson is among the newest.
