It seems like my homeowners insurance is considerably higher now than just a few years ago. Are some of you saying that you call your insurance company and ask for a reduced cost?

Not my understanding. I am saying "shop it around" when up for renewal

My homeowners insurance and car insurance are with the same company. I just called them a few weeks ago since my car insurance premium was coming due and was able to reduce my premium about $500 per year (I have a teenager ).

I think I will call them back this week and see if I can reduce my homeowners insurance!

Yes, we do this every year when we get the estimated cost for the upcoming year. So far we have been able to price shop and our current company will match a lower price so so we don't actually have to switch companies.
At the same time we ask about any other discounts we might be eligible for. It seems there's always something we qualify for, the savings do add up.
