I'd recommend starting with the lower Green. A solid dam-release Class 2+ run... it's where a lot of beginners from around here start out before heading to the cold cold Nantahala... The upper Green is a class 3 run, but there are two class 4s... one of which is very difficult to portage.
There is a local paddling club that is planning a Green River trip this weekend... it would be a great time to meet some other local paddlers and there will be plenty of experienced boaters to point out hazards and run safety. If you want more info DM me.
Make sure you get good beta if you're new to this region... some class 2-3 runs are followed pretty quickly by class 4-5 runs (Upper Green, e.g.)
