We have had some lively discussions over the years about small towns and that "Mayberry" mystique. Well, I just found a book written by an NC native, Scott Dickson, on that subject - small towns in NC.
So many folks move here and are looking for a replica of Mayberry, if not to live in - then, to visit. A lot of retirees truly want to find "Mayberry!"
I thought you might enjoy checking Dickson's book out . . . I understand he is writing another book - on more small and charming towns in NC.
Andy Griffith has admitted that much of what he used to create the fictional Mayberry came from Mt. Airy, NC. This is a small town North of Charlotte off I-77 near the Virginia border. Ironically, it is near the real Pilot Mt. Mt. Pilot was the fictional town near Mayberry in the show.

Interesting selection of towns, but more than that, it is interesting how the towns see themselves. For instance, when I see Hillsborough, I think Regulators. Apparently, the residents don't.
Personally , I'd have to say somewhere like Badin or New London.
Especially the former. There is 1 store and restaurant side by side on 740 across from Alcoa and beside the lake. I guarantee everyone knows everyone there. I believe the population is about 200? I may be in error , but I'm up there often and there are 3 people who run the store that recognize me. The spacing of my trips is anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Interesting.... nice place to visit , but I wouldn't desire to live there - well maybe if I go and rent a 2nd residence as a getaway , but aside from that , nah.
you and I have had this talk before....
McAdenville is not a small town feel any longer, and hasn't been in quite a while. That was long gone when they removed the mill homes for the homes that are there now.
