Hi,

I am planning a move from MA to Charlotte, NC soon. My new employer gave me the details for healthcare insurance that has me spinning!!

The quote is 1300$/month for Family coverage (insurer is Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield). My current monthly medical insurance premium through Aetna is 213$. Although I understand that the coverage might be different for some components, still the new premium is way too high as compared to what I am paying now.

I am even rethinking my move based on this difference in cost of premium as the cost of living can only account for some of the difference.

1) Are insurance premiums really so high in NC? or am I just spoilt at my current employer (insurance wise:-)).

2) Has anyone else been in this situation? Can I continue with Aetna even after leaving my employer (I know this is more of a question for AETNA but will ask anyways).

3) Does anyone in NC have Aetna and if so what is the premium you pay for a family (or know the amount a family might have to pay).

All members of my family are under 30, no health issues or disability etc. So the high premium is a HUGE sticker shock for me.

Plz help!!

Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a NY insurance company. Here in NC it is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC. You don't suppose they mixed up and quoted you a rate from NY instead of NC?

You are just spoiled by your current employer. Getting that kind of family rate ($213 a month) is gettting more and more rare. Though I will say, $1300 seems extreme to me too. The $400-800 range would be more the norm in my experience.

Try being unemployed and having to go with Cobra - that ran us $1800 a month for 3 in the family.

The reason I asked the question about NY vs NC is that if you are on a group plan from your employer, then where you live should make no difference. It sounds as if they are subsidizing an individual plan and that would make a difference.
