I am a real estate investor and would be ashamed to admit onto how many properties I've trespassed across the years. My intent is good--just want to see if the place is occupied and peak in the windows. No harm, no foul. But I have picked up some info along the way.

Definitely interrogate the mailman. They don't mind telling you what they know, at least to a certain extent.

You should also contact the county and/or city/town in which the property is located--ask for the code enforcement people first. Let them know that you're concerned about this property because it appears to have been vacant for eons and you don't want vagrants/druggies taking up ownership. Often, there are ordinances against properties remaining vacant for extended periods of time. They may be able to exert pressure on the current owners to deal with the situation.

Also ask to speak to the local zoning official/office--ask if that property is involved in any kind of zoning issue right now, or if it has been in the not-to-distant past. This is public information. This will give you insight as to whether there are any imminent development plans in the works.

You certainly can contact your local police and make an inquiry. At the very least, you could request more frequent police patrols. I'll tell you, a place like that is ripe for being taken over but druggies or vagrants. You don't want that, my friend.

You could also contact the people who developed your neighborhood--see what, if anything, they know about the place.

Places like that really become a nuisance. At the least, it's a haven for snakes and rats and whatever critter you can think of. But, like I said, druggies/vagrants are an even bigger problem. Kids get hurt playing in places like that. Remember when you were a kid? Could you have resisted the temptation to check it out? You're an adult, and it was too much to resist! At the very least, it's an eyesore and should be dealt with. In the end, it will adversely affect your property value.

That's my 2 cents. Have fun exploring in the meantime. I love old places like that.

Please don't go to that property anymore. It belongs to my grandmother and we hate that lots of old family heirlooms are now missing. That's PRIVATE PROPERTY. We even put things up (like a long chain out on the orange gate out front, and someone cut it off) to keep people out but alas, people still seem to be snooping around.
I guess I'll have to go again and put some signs up.

Funny thing is, I was just talking to my grandmother, who is the woman living in South Carolina, and she wanted us to check it out. I'm glad I found this.

Hmm, first post ever and it turns out this property is your Grandmother's house. You don't say

Hello, Itsmakeever. I'm not sure what the family circumstances are, but if you truly value the property (and any heirlooms that might be inside), I would strongly suggest that you remove the valuables and sell that property. I can promise you that the people commenting in this post are just normal, curious folks, just like anyone else, and would cause no harm to anything on that property. However, there are many many others out there who would take everything out of the house, including parts of the house (fireplace mantles, old beams, etc.) without even batting an eyelash. Worse yet, homes that have been vacant like this for any period of time are an open invitation to homeless people, runaways, druggies and animals of all sorts. Also, what will your grandmother do if someone gets injured on her property and sues your grandmother? Not to mention that it is simply poor stewardship to let a house deteriorate. Sell it and be rid of the responsibility. You'll be doing yourself and your neighbors a huge favor.

I would like to mention that the area is quite rural, so for any homeless people or druggies to be living there would be quite unlikely.
And I don't want to be rude, but it is trespassing. And I know that the people on here would probably not do anything wrong, but for someone to post the address where anyone could see is not a smart thing to do. That could easily be an open invitation for those kinds of people that the original poster would not want living behind a residential neighborhood with kids.
All we ask is that people don't go pilfering around through there.

And to skyegirl, your comment was irrelevant. I happened to find this forum just looking around on the Internet.

The home is also an original Howey family home. The road it sits off of, which is named after that family, hasn't even been paved for very long, since the late 80's. And it is out of the city limits, with the closest town having only one stoplight.

Not saying for sure that this guy is legit, but it is possible. If you put The Address Which Should Not Be Named into Google, the 2nd result is this thread. At first, I thought it was Google optimizing my search results but I get it on my iPad too which I don't use for City Data.

I don't know if you are truthful in your claim , but I agree. It is in your best interest to mind your own business. There may be snipers , or any number of ills awaiting you by going to the house , despite the fact this topic is several years old , the advice still applies.

I would argue that, considering this is a year old thread, resurrecting it to point that out would likely do more harm than good, since it probably would have faded into obscurity like most other threads, but I did read all 4 pages, and it was interesting the extra insight you provided.
