Which basically means that the minute you pull out your illeally concealed handgun in that place meant for the public and someone gets scared at the fact that you have a gun then you are guilty of that too. CCW doesn't give you a right to not know the laws! LEARN THEM
You're supposed to learn them in the class taken to get your CCW permit. But to use the old cliche, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. If brandishing a gun keeps me or some other undeserving person from getting attacked, I'll deal with the legal repercussions later. I'm sure if I bought a trainload of witnesses to my arraignment that say I kept them from getting attacked, the DA isn't going to indict me.

It happened to a friend of mine, on my behalf, about a dozen years ago. I was approached by 2 punks at an ATM, and had my buddy not pulled his gun and gotten them on the ground, who knows what would have happened. One of them had a gun but hadn't pulled it. Once the DA compared my buddy's Marine record to the long list of arrests the punks had compiled, he walked out.

Point well made - and well taken.

Well..... there is also this cliché. "Fools rush in where wise men are afraid to go". I would suggest that if you feel it is necessary to carry a gun into a particular situation, then don't go into the situation in the first place. This will keep you safer than anything else. The only point of carrying a gun is that you intend to pull it out and kill someone with it. Regardless of whether it's justified or not, I would just not want to even go there in the first place.

If you are going to carry a gun you had better know what you are doing with it if you get into a situation. The concealed weapons class will help you know how to use a gun but IMO it will not prepare you for real life situations. Several of my contacts in law enforcement tell me that when your average joe pulls a gun usually their nerves get the best of them. This includes Police officers as well. Some of the footage I have seen out there involves a cop and a bad guy. The cop pulls the gun shoots and misses while being with an 8-10 foot range of the bad guy. If a trained law enforcement officer has trouble with this I can only imagine what problems your average person would have (if they even had the nerve to pull it out). I am not against carrying a weapon all I am saying is you need to ask yourself "could I really use this against someone if it came down to it?" If you could not then it is really pointless to carry.

It doesn't matter. People with CCWs are not allowed to carry on the train per the rules. Not to mention that my employer won't let me legally carry once I get to work anyway. What am I supposed to do with my weapon? Check it somewhere and pick it up after work?

How do folks in major metro areas handle crime on mass transit? I have traveled in the majority of major metros in this country - and in several in Europe, as well - and I never felt that I needed to be concerned about having a weapon with me.

I don't believe the millions of people who use mass transit all over the globe are thinking they need to have a gun with them.

The question we need to be asking is - why does Charlotte have such a big problem with roaming bands of thugs, who accost folks with impugnity, not only on light rail but in schools and in our homes. Now, that is the crux of the problem. If major metros can deal with curbing crime on their mass transit systems, then surely to goodness this little city - with this very small light rail - can control the thugs. If not - WHY NOT?

Just like many other ammenities in Charlotte, sounds like the light rail is no longer safe for children and decent people. Sad! We've got too many people with nothing better to do all day than ride the rail for free and not enough civilized upbringing to know how to conduct themselves in public. As long as the political atmosphere of the city encourages "tolerance" of this type, these individuals will never be held accountable.

What other amenities in Charlotte are not safe for children and decent people (not that I'm agreeing that the light rail is unsafe)?

the hard part to accept if if that old man would have plugged them the women would have testified in court that they were just having a conversation with the young men when the old man went ballistic for no good reason at all and attacked them.
