I am moving over to Chicago from the Uk in October. I need advice on where people think i) the best place to live is - should I live in downtown or a suburb? And ii) offices - is there a place recommended for offices?

I am moving for business and personal so I hope can get some nice advice here.

Welcome to America and to Illinois I hope you will be very happy here. What price range do you have in mind, that could determine where to live? Are you single -no kids? City would be great for you,or Evanston on the lake. Are you a family person with kids? Maybe a suburb would fit better with good schools and neighborhoods. What are your interests? .Offices are in every suburb as well as the city and all surrounding areas, what kind of offce space? Price?

Offices? What business are you in? That will determine a location as well as some business are based downtown and others more in industrial parks/suburban. Do you need quick access to the airport for your business?

Do you reside in an urban area now? From my experience, most Europeans prefer to live either in the city or close to it. I've worked at a Dutch owned company and all of the people that came to Chicago on 2 year work visas, lived in the city, whether they had children or not.

The suburbs of Chicago are diverse. Each one is a community into itself, and very diverse ethnicity. However, I enjoy the Northwest suburbs as it is growing and a little more modern. This can be true of lots of suburbs, however, I have experienced a more down-home and relaxed feel in the Northwest. We have big malls and small shopping centers, the best high schools in the country are in Palatine, and nearby colleges as well, and a few minutes from the Ohare international airport. If you need to travel into Chicago frequently then a place along the train line is best.
