I could really use some help coming up with a short list of suburbs to investigate as options for relocating. We are coming from Milwaukee and our family is ready to get away from the overly dense city fringes and some place safer, with good schools and moderate home prices. Here's the kicker: 40 minutes or less on average to the Loop by train. Can anyone help point us in the right direction?

So far I'm considering Elmhurst and Glenview based on online data.
Thank you.

You are not going to have much luck finding moderate home prices, "low density" and under 40 minute train commute. You might start with the south suburbs, which tend to be a bit more spread out. Oak Forest and Tinley Park have some train service that is within your window...

Elmhurst and Glenview are not particularly affordable and tend to have modest lot sizes.

If the ORD in your screen name suggest you will need to be close to O'Hare those towns would be better than the south suburbs.

Umm, the Chicago area is more densely populated and more expensive than the Milwaukee area. I don't think you will find what you're looking for by relocating to a bigger metropolitan area. I'm not seeing the logic.

There are some more modest towns such as Elk grove village, wood dale, addison, etc. where home prices are less than places like Elmhurst or Glenview. A train ride would be around forty minutes or so but add on extra time to get to and from the train.

I guess it depends on your price range and where you are coming from outside of Milwaukee. The cost may be a deal breaker, but the neighborhoods in cities like Elmhurst and Glenview could definitely be less densely populated than areas like West Allis.

This thread is worthless without a price/budget and wants/needs. You can live anywhere in Chicago and Chicagoland for $500/month.

Not around here; at least not a place I would want to live in. Same for lots of other areas in some of the North and NW suburbs.

You can definitely rent an aparment in AH for $500/month, it might be a run down studio or even a bedroom in a house, but it is possible. That's why we need to know what the original poster wants.
