Hi there, I'm moving from Rochester Hills Michigan to IL for a job change. My husband's new employer will be located in Evanston. Could you please provide me a list of suburbs that are further away from Chicago, but close to Evanston? Chicago is a great place to visit, but I am overwhelmed by the size of the city, traffic, crime in some parts, cost, etc. I know that Evanston is about 30 mins from the border of Chicago, so I would like names of places that are less than 30 mins from Evanston, but further from Chicago. Evanston itself is too pricey. My wish list is:

Safe/low crime rate
Affordable housing - would like to rent a condo. Currently paying $1200 for 2beds, 2baths, attached garage, 1400 sq ft
Basic things to do in area - nice mall, variety of restaurants

Thank you!

Just to clear things up, Evanston and Chicago share a border.

If you look at towns that are near Evanston but inland you will probably find better values for rentals. Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove would be the first places I would check.

Thank you! What is a realistic drive time from Schaumburg or Elk Grove Village to Evanston? Based on the forum, those places also seem nice and within 30 miles from Evanston. However, Michigan's 30 miles tend to be a true 30 minute drive or less. I'm sure this may not be the case in parts of IL.

Chet's advice is good. Schaumburg and Elk Grove would be bad drives.

You definitely don't want to live in Schaumburg or Elk Grove and commute to Evanston. The drive is all surface streets and those towns aren't so great that the commute would be worth it.

Traffic congestion on surface streets can equal a 90 minute trip for 30 miles in fair weather. I I think it might be Better to make the drive to spend a day at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg than 2- 3 hours driving to work and home every day. Rush hour traffic is frightful - but generally well managed.

This is NOT your average mall. It has 300 stores and restaurants spread over 2.7 million feet of retail space. It is the 5th largest mall in America, and the #1 tourist attraction in Illinois. The latest addition is a hotel for dedicated shoppers. You'll find everything from Lord & Taylor to Apple and IKEA.

The problem with those commutes is that there is no direct highway route from those towns to Evanston. I'd start by looking into Glenview / Northbrook / Deerfield / Highland Park. If the prices there are way above budget, I'd look west of there and look into Arlington Heights / Prospect Heights / Mount Prospect / Wheeling / Palatine / Des Plaines. The commute from these areas wouldn't be that great, but it would probably be better than it would be from Schaumburg or Elk Grove Village.

Thank you. I will check these out. How are these areas in terms of safety?

This. They are just as nice, if not nicer, than the other areas you mentioned.
