I am moving to Chi-Town and some told me that gold coast/streeterville is a great place for a young professional since shopping, restaurants, and malls are close by. Is this true? If so my friend suggested the following building that currently has a studio for rent 550 N. St Clair #903, Chicago, IL 60611 | Streeterville Condo ... any more information and advice will help?

Post in the Chicago city forum. The suburbs forum won't get you that much advice.

There are one or two posters that thnk these are terrific areas but even they are looking for places to rent in hipper areas.

Lots of tourists and an odd mix of residents that trend a bit older are some of the downsides.

Thanks

Default The average agre of both renters, but especially owners...

...is higher in Gold Coast than pretty much any other desirable Chicago area with similar rents for high rises. Certainly not as "geriatric" as may once have gotten but given the often very high prices / levels of HOA fees many buildings are actively discouraging more value-oriented just out of college tenants & shoppers.

Similarly Streeterville is somewhat dominated by folks that really are not "dialed into" the bigger drivers of Chicago's overall condo / rental market -- it is not "neighborhood oriented" and really is not popular with folks looking for identifiable "hotspots" be that sports bars of Wrigepyville, the hipper dining / drinking / music venues of Wiicker Park, the more charming / carriage trade type feel of Lincoln Park or even the "brand consciousness" of the Gold Coast botiques... Great access to NU Law & Med, many law firms nearby, some real hardcore "road warriors" in marketing / advertising love walk to work convenience when they are in town but overall a very UN-Chicago vibe..

Thanks Chet >>> I learned alot from your post.

Oh a went to Stan's Donuts near wicker (yummy) ... I am working in NBC tower. I was wondering if 1600 price point is very high. I will not be buying only renting for the first couple of years and I checked with the realtor and she said I would not be paying the HOA fees and that all utilities except hydro is included in the rental price. Do you know if any other buildings and places that are great and where I can bike or walk to work?

My perception is its okay but most of the in the know about Chicago young professionals don't live there. I am sure there are some. I think Lincoln park, parts of Lakeview, Wicker Park or Bucktown are all places that would be more popular. Also Ukrainian village and for a more hipster address, Logan Square. I know my son is 27 and if you ever suggested he live in Gold coast or Streeter ville, he would look at you as if you had two heads.
