Hi all! I am new here. I am so excited and impressed to find such a thorough and thoughtful resource.

Is there a map anywhere with a radius in minutes travel (to downtown) via Metra? Due to circumstances, I would have to limit my commute via Metra to downtown to 30 minutes. Does such a map exist? It would be so handy.

Thanks!

You can look at the Metra schedules for times that trains leave each station vs when they arrive. Would take a little work maybe.

Schedule & Fare Finder

If you want 30 mins or less you can look at each lines schedule and mark the stop closest to 30 mins from the Chicago station. Once you have one station on each line you could mark those on a map to see how far out 30 mins is.

I think the OP will need to use the various timetables on the Metrarail.com site.

There was a thread a few years ago -- Are there other express metra trains that I don't know about from teh suburbs into Chicago?

Sounds like Berwyn to Riverside on the BNSF line to me.

If you look at the system map, your possibilities will all be near to downtown.

It's further complicated by the existence of express trains that only run a few "peak hour" routes a day. If you can't use the express trains, your commute may be longer from a given station.

Express trains on BNSF travel the distance from Union Station to / from Downers Grove in under 25 minutes and the distance to/ from Naperville in just a hair longer, 33-4 minutes.

The UP_ W line has a express that rockets out to Wheaton in 34 minutes.

UP_N has a Wilmette express that is 28 minutes

Yes, its true, an Express will get them further away from the city quicker but they don't run Express all day and night and is why I relied on "local" service timetables for my previous post.

I tried my hand at one a while back. The graphics were not very good. But it showed Naperville (33 minutes) about as far as O'Hare (30 minutes) though the mileage was about twice as much. Wheaton (24 minutes) about half as far as Orland Park (67 minutes) even though the mileage is equivalent. I used the fastest rush hour train to do it.

Keep in mind the fast trains to places like Wheaton are few. Like maybe one. So if that is not convenient you need to add in an extra fifteen minutes. also you have to add in time to drive to the train, park, walk to the station, get from the station to your office. A total thirty minute commute to the suburbs is impossible. Thirty minutes train time yes. Unless you work in the station building.
