Hello. My husband, cat, and I are planning to move to the Chicago area next spring from Minneapolis. We are looking right now to see where exactly we would like to settle down. We have a couple of places in mind(Schaumburg, Rosemont, Elk Grove Village, Oak Park, Forest Park, Hardwood Heights, Norridge, Schiller Park, and of course Chicago), but I would love some insight from those that live in or near those areas.

We are looking to pay at least eight hundred or less a month. I know in Chicago that may not be feasible, but what about the others mentioned? On top of that, great public transportation is a must, as well as entertainment, shopping, and food in walking distance. Also, any places that weren't in the list that any of you could recommend that fits our criteria would be great, too.

Thank you!

You can pretty much take Schaumburg off your list. It won't meet any of your criteria. I'm far less familiar with Rosemont and Elk Grove Village, but I'm PRETTY sure they wouldn't fill the bill either. $800 wouldn't even get you a studio apartment in Schaumburg - and the public transportation and walkability is not there either - Schaumburg is a very large suburban town and is very spread out. You would pretty much HAVE to have a car.

I feel like Forest Park, of all the ones mentioned, would be the best fit.

Oak Lawn is cheap and has pretty decent transit options too...

Oak Lawn is very far away from the options the poster mentions. Where is work? A place like Elk Grove Village is fairly far from Oak Park. In some ways the list makes sense, in other ways no.

ToriaT is correct, we need more details.

The OP has not mentioned any kind of work; a location that is central-ish, like Forest Park, might not really be feasible if work location is out in an area that assumes nearly all employees are driving...

For $800 a month? I can't think of ANYWHERE in either place that would have rent for $800 a month!

$800/mo is not going to get a premium complex in AH or MP...

800 a month might get you a studio....or a one bedroom in a place like Berwyn which is fine actually.
