Shouldn't it be negative temperature with snow in the middle of December?
No. Where the hell do you think Chicago IS - the arctic? It is not that common to have temperatures below zero notwithstanding last winter's record cold: 2014 Winter Has Most Days At Zero Or Below In History « CBS Chicago The average in a normal year is seven.

We sometimes get crazy extreme years like the winter of 2013/2014 where we had a ton of snow and lots of below zero temps. Likewise I remember some winters that were so mild, we didn't get snow until January.

The west side is more Jewish than the east side, however there's still tons of Christmas decorations on many of the homes in more Jewish populated sections. The reason I mention this was that someone was actually concerned about moving to Northbrook because they wanted to put Christmas decorations on their home. Lol!

Maybe you need to research actual climate data. Growing up in the Chicago Burbs, we had white Christmases half the time. Most years, we had enough sub Freezing (32 ABOVE ZERO) to support having an outdoor ice rink, but not every year. It is rare for temperatures to dip below zero for extended periods of time.

Mean Daily temperatures are in the 20's. When its windy, it is unpleasant, but not dangerously so if you have a coat. I remember schools cancelling a couple of times because of the actual cold, but it certainly wasn't an annual occurrence.

Is it just me? I find people across the country have a total misconception of Chicago winters. Look…the last two winters were miserable with snow and temperatures. but so what: the rest of the country was experiencing horrible weather as well.

to me, a normal Chicago winter is easily survivable. many days I go out of my house and the weather is just fine, even comfortable. getting hit by major snow storms seems rare. I, like others in the area, are out and about during much of the winter with weather hardly holding us back.

just my opinion. maybe i'm nuts. does anyone see it the way i do? can't help it, i just don't get the whole "Chicago's awful winter" routine.

Well, the weather forecasters did predict a milder winter this year due to this being an El Niño year. I wouldn't bank on future Midwest winters being this mild, however. The last probably 3 winters were pretty rough. I think it was the end of 2011 / early 2012 winter 4 years ago that was the last mild one (the year that led into a 2012 St. Patrick's Day in which it was literally 70 degrees outside lol). The year before that one was the snowpocalypse that buried Lake Shore Drive (late January / early February 2011).

Chicago winters are unpredictable. One day you'll have on your furnace, and the next, your air conditioning. That's the problem, it's never consistent. I am a native Chicagoan.

This winter is really really mild so far, but who knows, next week we could have the killer blizzard of 2015 (oh wait, wasn't that a few weeks ago?).

Completely agree! I definitely am ready for spring by March, but you just deal with it. I'd rather take our winter over extreme summer heat.
