I can't believe despite being only 22 miles away that it's almost an hour drive - considering these are the 2nd and 4th most populous cities in Illinois!

Are there plans for any type of exurban highway to connect cities like Joliet, Aurora, Elgin, and the Crystal Lake/McHenry areas?

The Illiana Expressway, below would connect I65 to I55

The Prairie Parkway below would connect I80-I88 from Minooka to Elburn

Both of these plans especially the latter have been put on the back burner given the poor financial state of the state of IL. However these two put together would get one from Crown Point, IN to near Aurora.

The land that was part of planned "Prairie Parkway" corridor was boosted up by speculators including disgraced former US Speaker of the House Denny Hastert -- Remembering Hastert's Prairie Parkway | Progress Illinois

You do know that US30 links Aurora to Joliet, right? It goes go through Plainfield which has become more developed, but all things considered the average traffic volumes are not so oppressive as to make the travel times unrealistic.

At minimum, it would've been nice if the proposed Metra STAR Line along the Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern tracks ringing Chicago had become a reality. It would've went through places like Lake Bluff, Lake Zurich, Barrington, West Chicago, Plainfield, Joliet, and was talked about to extend perhaps as far east as Chicago Heights.

I wouldn't mind if the Illiana Expressway and Prairie Parkway had become a reality, if at least as a truck only bypass that'd reduce traffic on other Chicago area expressways.
