Just wondering if any outdoor enthusiasts are excited about this study going on in Saint Charles for its downtown, which if positive results happen in April will lead to a Whitewater kayaking and rafting Park in downtown Saint Charles.

If it happens, together with the already existing Whitewater course in Yorkville, will give families as well as expert kayakers plenty of safe opportunities for this outdoor activity in Chicagoland.

While that is certainly an interesting "study" I would question if it really will be feasible. While the initial costs may not be outrageous the history of Illinois making short sighted decisions when it comes to many aspects of "outdoor recreation" is notoriously poor. The inability of the legislature to fund the existing state resources in the face of every growing pensions already makes us look like third rate -- https://www.dnr.illinois.gov/closure...sandareas.aspx

Combine this with the potential for costly and embarrassing "rescues" and I would not hold my breath for action -- Fox River low-head dams 'notoriously deadly,' expert says While I gather that eliminating all the damns might be a boon to kayakers the fear is that which ever town goes first sees surge in activity that more deadly situations happen down stream...

The article you posted is a good reason why the Whitewater courses should exist in Chicagoland .there are many kayakers in Chicagoland who make use of the rivers despite the low dams and there are many deaths because of it this . the following paragraph from the article explains why Whitewater courses are a safe alternative to these Dangerous dam areas . Whitewater courses are foolpro- no one gets hurt on those.

"Low head dams are notoriously deadly," said Rushton, whose company used to be located in a building adjacent to the Geneva dam. "So it's always just a matter of time, and that's why there has been a big movement to either remove dams or re-engineer them as whitewater parks."
