Not safer by itself, more expensive. BTW how do you get groceries? Use a taxi? Peapod? And be "impossible" I really you can't walk at all, no sidwalks, too far.

I think you can guess what town(s) were guided by this principal.

I walk to the grocery store and it is far. There are "some" sidewalks, but I also have to cross a bridge that goes over a highway so the sidewalks discontinue for until I get to the nezt intersection. The community I live in is actually kind of cheap.

Georgia probably some different challenges.

The towns in Chicago that fall into "make everyone drive" category are the places like Oak Brook, Burr Ridge, South Barrington and others. The developers thought that towns that made walking to easy would encourage people to live too close together to blend in with the big houses/lots they wanted to build. Funny thing now is that despite the lack of grocery stories they do have a lot of people that "fitness walk" or ride bikes on paved paths that are bigger than sidewalks. They just really do not go anywhere where you could shop...

Atlanta metro was never really meant to grow that big, but when there were so many people moving into the area during the 80's 90's and today, there was plenty of cheap land to eat up and since the counties have alot of power, you could get water and electricity without living in an incoporated area. People built housing developments larger because there was an abundance(and still is to this day). Chicago was building suburban communities long before and therefore were built for the automobile to a certain point, but could be used for walking. It is recent developents that are like this. Atlanta is full of recent developments and counting. I used to go into Alpharetta alot for work(I was dropped off by a van the company used) and I noticed that alot of places in Alpharetta had no sidewalks unless you went to the shopping centers.
