Hi everyone,

I grew up in Madison, WI but have lived in Fayetteville, GA (suburb of Atlanta) since 1997. I miss the midwest and want to be closer to my parents now. I have 2 teenagers and plan on moving back to the midwest in 2 years once my daughter graduates from high school. I don't want to move back to Madison because of it's small size. I want to live in the suburbs of Chicago and am thinking on Evanston. I am bi-racial (black and white) and am looking for a safe town that has diversity, culture, and a good high school. I plan on renting a house instead of buying one. Does Evanston offer these things? I have 2 great danes so love the fact that it offers a doggie beach park!

Hi 2Year - I think you will like Evanston a lot based on what you are looking for. There are a few threads on this forum that are Evanston specific and I would suggest reading through them to get a better feel for the community. Of course everything is subjective, but the comments are helpful.

The only thing is that Evanston is somewhat pricey - but again, this will depend on your personal situation - what is pricey to some is affordable to others. Good luck!

Evanston does sound right for you, but like any town has it's share of issues.

Um, Madison WI is about 4x the size of Evanston IL:

Madison, Wisconsin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evanston, Illinois (IL) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

Chet, but Chicagoland is multiple times the size of madison....

what's your point?

Evanston sounds about right for the OP.

Hi Chet, what I meant was that as far as major cities go, Madison is small. I lived there for 23 years. I like the suburbs but want to live near a big city like Chicago that has a lot of culture to it. I love living near Atlanta, but my parents health isn't too good so I feel I need to be closer to home.

As a former Madisonian myself, I can say that Evanston is a good choice for you. You may also want to check out Oak Park.

Thanks for your replies and links, everyone. I have heard that Evanston is pricey, which is another reason I am hoping to rent a house. I've checked out some websites and don't really see any rental homes in Evanston. I'm not interested in an apartment or condo because of my great danes. I need a fenced-in back yard.

I will research Oak Park, too. Besides the obvious: safety, good schools, I want a town that is diverse.

You may also want to consider how far you will be from work (if you already have a job lined up)
