Of course, the value of the response is based on your critieria and family situation but assuming you're talking about the safety and attractiveness of the area, you'll get many opinions (maybe not) on that location. It's in the bottom right (SE) section of Oak Park... Lyman is only a block or two West of Austin. Conventional wisdom states the closer you get to Austin, the less stable and safe the neighborhood. However, you are south of the Ike, which is typically (again, conventional wisom) safer than being close to Austin N of the Ike, near Columbus Park. If this is an issue you may want to consider venturing about 5-6 blocks to the West where you may find more "stable" neighborhoods.

I'd suggest checking out the OP Crime Stats on the Oak Park Village site.

As far as the good things about the neighborhood, it's near the Austin Blue Line stop, near Barrie Park and Roosevelt Rd. is nearby for restaurants, pharmacies, etc. I guess one could also put Roosevelt Rd. in the negative column too.

Roosevelt is a fairly active road (ie not desolate) so I wouldn't worry too much about being a crime victim. Being hit by a car is probably your bigger problem.

Have you considered Forest Park (burb W. of OP)? You will not want to ride your bike down Roosevelt-- at any time day or night-- at least farther west toward Loyola. It's a highly trafficked road that turns into a quasi-highway about a mile E of the River Road.

Suppose you could, but there are large plots of land with cemeteries, business parks and forest preserves, so alternate paths are limited. The DesPlaines River meanders through that area and unfortunately large plots o land border it with limited crossings. Try googling it again and see what you get.

from:Loyola University Medical Center to:41.865854,-87.818184 to:Elgin Ave to:S Maple Ave to:Fillmore St & Lyman Ave, Oak Park, IL 60304 - Google Maps

this route is only .2 miles longer. and it means not riding the entire time on roosevelt.

Edit-- the stretch between DesPlaines and Ist Ave. is the section I was talking about. There might be a sidewalk down that section though. Can't remember. Either way, looks like your alternate route is a decent one.
