This is January 2009. Notice more than 60 percent of the robberies occur east of Ridgeland. Therefore, 60 percent of the robberies occurred in a part of town that makes up roughly 25 percent of the geographic area but probably close to 30 or 35 percent of the population.

The map legend says that there are seven armed robberies for the month, indicated by a red dot. Yet there are only five red dots on the map. If a robber gets two people in one incident, is it counted as multiple robberies?

Anyway, on that map, four of the five red dots are east of Ridgeland....

Crime in Oak Park is mostly T-shaped, however. I've looked at these maps month after month, and the patern that emerges is that crime is worse east of Ridgeland, but it also is worse near the downtown, and you can always see a concentration of crimes penetrating west along Lake Street, Madison Street, and Washington Street. Also, I've noticed that east of Ridgeland crime is a bit lower in the southeast corner of town where the Columbus Park provides a buffer between Oak Park and the city.

It's always surprising to see the number of garage burglaries in Oak Park... 26 in the month of January! That's one for every 2,000 residents. Detached garages off of alleys are always such an easy target for burglars. You would never see this problem in a modern suburb with attached garages.

Oak Park had 7 Armed Robberies in January this year! Wow! I wonder if Citymom feels this is normal for a suburb of 50,000 people.

Nobody likes break-ins and armed robberies. Do you have any constructive, practical suggestions for how to reduce them.

If you adjust Elmwood Park's population upward to equal Oak Park, you would average about five robberies per month. And Elmwood Park crime is down about 33% over the last ten years.

I suspect promis1 would favor a law outlawing liberals in Oak Park.

It still amazes me that people leave their garage doors open or their side/utility doors unlocked. Yet this is often the situation according to the crime blotters.
