I live in Niles just east of Golf Mill Mall. The area is fine and the school system is decent, though I don't think much of Gemini JR High it has been 15 years so maybe it's changed.

How far out could I go and still be in a 30-min commute range? Is there public transit out there? Anyway to go against traffic?

If you asking how far from Niles you could live and rely on public transit to get you to work in 30 minutes or less the answer is pretty dismal. Bus lines move FAR MORE SLOWLY than single passenger vehicles. I don't remember the formula but if you calculate your average travel time as something like speed limit plus 20% for stoplights and such I believe it is MORE THAN DOUBLE that for buses. That means that anything more than about 12 miles or so will be over your 30 minute limit...

OK, thanks--I also meant 30 minutes by car, too. It's just not easy to tell on a map what traffic patterns are like and how the hamper a commute. If we wanted to be within a 30-min commute TO Niles by car or whatever is the fastest mode, what are the options for the good combo of schools/community/house for a growing family?

Just move to Park Ridge or Glenview and be done with it.

I didn't mean to annoy you, Avengerfire. I don't live in IL or even NEAR IL and wanted to get a good idea of the various options around a possible job relocation. Is that not what this board is, partly, for? I just wanted help from the locals. Not really looking for a snide attitude, but good to know that's what I'll get if I come here looking for information.
