This seems obvious, but why not Oak Lawn? There's a huge range of housing in all price ranges. Lots of new shopping and dining options. Great schools. Outstanding library. The park district runs swimming pools, a fitness center, a wildlife refugee, an ice skating rink, theater program, and much more. There's Metra service in town. Midway and the Orange Line is nearby. The Tri-State is on the western edge of town, and the Dan Ryan isn't far away. I work in Willowbrook and live in Oak Lawn. It's about a 30-40 minute commmute, and while Willowbrook and Darien are nice towns, Oak Lawn has so much more to offer, and is much more affordable.

I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to find any decent apartments in Oak Lawn. If you're looking for apartments, you won't find any large apartment complexes here. Instead check the local paper:

www.dailysouthtown.com

You'll find a huge assortment of apartments throughout the village, mostly in 3, 6, or 12 unit buildings in residential neighborhoods, which I think would be a lot more comfortable than being in a huge complex.

You'll also find condo listings in the paper as well as by checking the MLS, try realtor.com. Again, most condo's are in smaller buildings, though there are some new mid rise's in the town center, with 1 bedrooms starting in the low 200's. There is one development, about 35 years old, called The Cloisters, with 20, 12 unit buildings. There are always some condos for sale there, with a 2 bedroom selling in the 120's or 130's. They have central air, the complex is extremely well maintained, and the assesment is only about $150 a month, which includes heat and water. It's quite a bargain.

And I would consider Oak Lawn to be a safe town. Not crime free, of course, but you can always feel pretty safe walking down the street.
