Depends on what you want to be near but I would choose Palatine in a heartbeat. There are some bad hoods but they can be easily avoided. Palatine is a great location, near ORD, Schaumburg shopping and several Metra stations to head downtown. I love it here except for that it's part of cook county which sucks.

Is this a new hobby or would you care to provide us more details on what you are looking for? Geez, 6 different posts with: Is this safe, is that safer, would you live here or live there and yet you don't provide us with the details to give you more accurate information. Just (getting silly) lists. Have you ventured out from your current location and used your own eyes? Are you doing it all via internet? Are you gathering info for someone else (parents perhaps)?

If the choice for safest town on the list is between Palatine and Gurnee, I would pick Gurnee. Based on data:

2008 Murders- Palatine-1 Gurnee- 0
2008 Rapes- Palatine-10 Gurnee- 8
2008 Robberies- Palatine- 13 Gurnee 13
2008 Assaults- Palatine- 34 Gurnee 23

REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS: Palatine- 44 Gurnee 15

Other useful data to compare Palatine to Gurnee:

2008 Median Household Income- Palatine- $81,377 Gurnee- $88,889
Residents over 25 with Bachelors Degrees- Palatine- 41% Gurnee- 47.8%
Residents over 25 with Graduate Degrees- Palatine- 14% Gurnee- 17%
