We are interested in one of the cool older neighborhoods along the Metra line, such as Park Ridge or Arlington Heights, walking distance from the train, but they look quite pricey and also may be politically too conservative. Can anyone recommend a cool, "happening" liberal area in the western burbs with older homes, shopping and along the Metra line? The kids are grown so we don't need to worry about school districts. Thanks!
If being in a liberal, urban place that's not quite the city is really important to you, I'd highly suggest Oak Park. The commute won't be great but it won't be awful either. Oak Park to Schaumburg with no traffic is only like 30 minutes.

Wow, its funny how no one mentioned Oak Park until the 7th page of this thread. How could we have overlooked it?

I had no desire to sift through 6 pages of BS. Your post perfectly sums up why.

If you want to avoid BS, you shouldn't be on city-data.

Wink Proud to live in Elmhurst

I'm very liberal and live in Elmhurst. If you don't want a quick commute to the city, good schools, second to none library (by the way people from surrounding suburbs come to use the library), museums, plenty of restaurants, a prairie path to walk, jog, ride or just sit and enjoy, a new state of the art hospital (currently under construction), local shops owned probably by your neighbor, a college and year-round entertainment this is not the town for you. Our homes are filled with singles, families and seniors. Seriously, I have been here many years and yes, we do have the small town charm but I like to think we also have the modern conveniences too. Best success on your search....(Yes I will disclose this, I'm a local Elmhurst realtor...)
